Yesterday was a special day at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson. We celebrated a new (and large) incoming class of students and installed our newest chaired professor during Convocation. This was the 49th Convocation of RTS in Jackson, and it has been my joy to be a part in over half of them since joining the faculty in 1990. So, today was my 25th convocation and the beginning of my 25th year of professorial service. One of the joyful features of the day was the public recognition of Dr. Guy Prentiss Waters as the James M. Baird, Jr.…
Today, July 10, 2014, is the 505th birthday of John Calvin. He was born in Noyon, Picardy, France on 10 July, 1509. In July of 2009, I had the privilege of being a part of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Calvin’s birth. John Calvin was an important theologian and leader of the 16th century Protestant Reformation. The event was held, appropriately, in Geneva, Switzerland and in St. Pierre Church (and in the Auditoire de Calvin), and papers were read and sermons were preached, all related to the life and ministry and…
Archibald Alexander has some fascinating observations in his chapter “Imperfect Sanctification.–The Spiritual Warfare” in his famous book Thoughts on Religious Experience (1841) that are relevant to current discussions in the Reformed family on sanctification. See especially his remarks in the final paragraph quoted. When he speaks of “ultra-Calvinists” his reference is to Calvinistic Antinomianism (the denial of the moral law as a rule of life for believers and the denigration of progressive sanctification). “It may be difficult to…
Dr. J. Ligon Duncan gives the 2014 Commencement address at RTS Jackson. Dr. Duncan uses 1 Timothy 1 to ask the listener what is their goal in ministry?
In his message at Together for the Gospel 2014, Ligon expounded Numbers 5:1-4 where the Lord tells Moses to command Israel that those who are unclean must be put outside the camp. He unpacked the practical, theological, and Christological reasons for this command, and pointed to Christ. The beauty of the Gospel was preached powerfully.
The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood held their national conference the morning of April 8, 2014 at the Galt House in Louisville. There were 1,300 in attendance. Ligon gave the opening address, “Where CBMW & Complementarianism Has Been.” In this address, Ligon briefly recaps the origins, history, and mission of the Council of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. He also provides a succint and helpful explanation of complementarianism.
Metro Christian Living, a magazine in Jackson, Miss., has published in their April issue an article titled “Ligon Duncan: Faithfully Following Christ.” Here’s an excerpt from the article: The leadership challenges facing an evangelical seminary in 2014 are far more complex than they were back in the 1960s when RTS was founded. Training people in the Bible and in truth, and equipping them to engage the culture, has never been more critical. “I think RTS is uniquely positioned.…
On Dec. 31, 2013, Dr. Ligon Duncan said on his Facebook page, “Today is my last day as senior minister of First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, MS. 17+ years of joy and privilege. I am deeply grateful to God and to this wonderful congregation.” The chancellor has moved his extensive library to RTS/Jackson and his assistant Jan Hyde will also be going with him to assist him at the seminary.
