Some of you may have seen this important article over at The Gospel Coalition about the decline and relocation of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) by Collin Hansen, who is a graduate of the school. Reformed Theological Seminary has been friends with TEDS for many years. Over the years, a number of our faculty have done their studies there before coming to RTS, and a number of our graduates have gone on to do doctoral work there. We wish TEDS all the best in this new stage of their institutional life. The last twenty years have been tough for accredited graduate theological education…
The Lord's Day Morning May 27, 2007 Philippians 1:12-20 “For the Greater Progress of the Gospel” Dr. J. Ligon Duncan III Amen. If you have your Bibles, I'd invite you to turn with me to Philippians, chapter one, as we continue to study our way through this great letter. Let me ask you to look especially at verses 9-11, the last part of the passage we studied together last week. I do believe it has direct bearing on this new section that we're launching into today. We’re going to be looking at verses 12-20, but in verses 9-11, you see the prayer that Paul had prayed for the Philippians (the passage that we gave some attention to last week), and we see how it flows into logically the experience which Paul describes in verses 12-20. In verses 9-11, the Apostle Paul reports…
The Lord's Day Morning May 20, 2007 Philippians 1:7-11 “Love Abounding” Dr. J. Ligon Duncan III I'd invite you to turn with me to Philippians, chapter one. We’re looking at verses 7-11 today, and these verses span two parts of this first chapter of this great letter. Really, if you look back to verse 3, from verse 3 to verse 8 the Apostle Paul is expressing his joy in, his thanksgiving to God for, his love for, the Philippians. Over and over in various ways, Paul with a thankful heart expresses gratitude to God for the Philippians, and he enumerates some of the reasons why he's so joyful about them, why he's rejoicing in, why he's thankful for the Philippians. And we're going to start reading today right in the middle of that series of expressions of…
The Lord's Day Morning May 13, 2007 Philippians 1:6 “He Finishes What He Starts” Dr. J. Ligon Duncan III If you have your Bibles, I'd invite you to turn with me to Philippians, chapter one. When we started our study of this book together, we noted that this was a book filled with thanksgiving and with joy, and we said that this started with thanksgiving and with joy. In fact, if you allow your eyes to look at verses 3-5, the passage we're going to read today in verse 6 is a continuation of this one sentence, this one thought, this one prayer of joyful thanksgiving that the Apostle Paul has opened the book with, and I want you to see the components of it. Last time we were together we said that the Apostle Paul shows in this passage his gratitude, his joy, and his focus on…
Wednesday Evening May 9, 2007 Numbers 9:15-10:10 “Cloud and Trumpets” Dr. Ligon Duncan III Tonight we will begin in Numbers 9 at verse 15, reading to the end of the chapter and then continuing on into Numbers 10, down to the tenth verse. The remaining verses that we’ll be looking at in Numbers 9 will describe for us the cloud that rested upon the tabernacle and which led the people in both the form of cloud in day and fire at night; and then, in chapter 10, a description of the trumpets…
The Lord's Day Morning May 6, 2007 Philippians 1:3-5 “I Thank God for You” Dr. J. Ligon Duncan III If you have your Bibles, I'd invite you to turn with me to Philippians, chapter one, verses three to five. We began our study of Philippians last week. We noted some of the great themes in this book. For instance, we said that already (beginning with verse 6) Paul is emphasizing the sovereignty of God in salvation. We said that in chapter two, you have that beautiful emphasis on the…

Wednesday Evening May 2, 2007 Numbers 9:1-14 “Passover” Dr. Ligon Duncan III I’d invite you to turn with me to Numbers, chapter nine. If you don’t have your Bibles with you, I believe that the text of tonight’s message is in the bulletin, and you can follow along there. A couple of weeks ago we were in the longest chapter in the Bible (that is, if you don’t count Psalm 119), Numbers 7, running to 89 verses; and we read all of those verses as we worked our way through…
