Some of you may have seen this important article over at The Gospel Coalition about the decline and relocation of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) by Collin Hansen, who is a graduate of the school. Reformed Theological Seminary has been friends with TEDS for many years. Over the years, a number of our faculty have done their studies there before coming to RTS, and a number of our graduates have gone on to do doctoral work there. We wish TEDS all the best in this new stage of their institutional life. The last twenty years have been tough for accredited graduate theological education…
The Lord's Day Morning First Presbyterian Church February 4, 2007 Psalm 51:1-19; John 3:1-8 “A Biblical Understanding of Conversion” Dr. J. Ligon Duncan III We've been working for a number of weeks through what we've called biblical priorities for a healthy church. We've been looking at some of the qualities which characterize a local gathering (a local body, a local congregation) of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ who are ruled in their life and ministry together by the directions of the word of God, and whose life and ministry is in fact fueled by the work of God's Holy Spirit. And, among other things, most recently we have been looking at a biblical understanding of the gospel as one mark of a healthy local fellowship of believers. One thing that every…
Hymns of the Faith “For All the Saints” A Presentation of First Presbyterian Church Jackson, Mississippi With Dr. Ligon Duncan, Dr. Derek Thomas, and Dr. Bill Wymond Dr. Wymond: Good morning! This is “Hymns of the Faith,” brought to you by Jackson's First Presbyterian Church. The minister of the First Presbyterian Church is Dr. Ligon Duncan. Stay tuned for “Hymns of the Faith.” And now here with “Hymns of the Faith” is Dr. Ligon Duncan. Dr. Duncan: Thank you, Bill Wymond. This is “Hymns of the Faith,” and I'm Ligon Duncan with my good friend, Derek Thomas and with Dr. Bill Wymond to discuss great hymns of the Christian faith. The Christian faith is a singing faith, and we have had a delightful time over the last number of months studying together some of the…
First Presbyterian Church Wednesday Evening February 7, 2007 Numbers 4:1-49 “Priests and Duties (2)” Dr. J. Ligon Duncan III Please turn with me in your Bibles to Numbers 4, as we continue to work our way through this great book of the Old Testament.. We’ve been in Numbers for about four weeks. We spent the first week giving an introduction to the book and arguing why this book is so applicable, and frankly so exciting to study, for us today. The Apostle Paul in First Corinthians tells us that this book was written for us as Christians, so it’s not just a book full of dry, dusty old history about a people that no longer exist living in a place that we’ve never been. It’s a book for us today, for the living of these days. And we commented on the fact that Guide…
Wednesday Evening January 31, 2007 Numbers 3:1-51 “Priests, Duties, Firstborn” Dr. Ligon Duncan III If you have your Bibles, I’d invite you to turn with me to Numbers, chapter 3. There should be a sheet somewhere near by you that has the text of that whole chapter. And there should also be an outline — at least, an outline that recounts what we have done so far, and also provides a diagram of the organization or the arrangement of the tribes and the priests which we read about last…
The Lord's Day Morning January 21, 2007 I Corinthians 15:1-4 Biblical Priorities for Church Life The Gospel Applied Dr. J. Ligon Duncan III Amen. If you have your Bibles, I'd invite you to turn with me to I Corinthians 15:1-4. We've been working our way through a series of topical expository messages on the subject of “Biblical Priorities for The Life of Our Church” and we've been asking ourselves all along, “What does the Bible say are the qualities (or the…
Wednesday Evening January 24, 2007 Numbers 2 “Arranged” Dr. Ligon Duncan III Amen. If you have your Bibles, I’d invite you to turn with me to Numbers 2. Thank you. It’s not quite as long a passage as last week, but it’s a fairly long passage. Last week we were in Numbers 1, which gave us the numbering of the tribes; now in Numbers 2, we come to the arranging of the tribes. And we’ve said as we have come to the book of Numbers that this book, though it is filled with…
The Lord's Day Morning January 14, 2007 I Corinthians 15:1-4 “The Biblical Gospel” Dr. J. Ligon Duncan III We’re continuing our series in which we are studying the biblical priorities for the life of our church, and we've been asking throughout this series what are the qualities, what are the marks, what are the things that characterize a healthy local church? Now, our desire is not simply to sort of spell out the things that we are most interested in having in our local church,…
Wednesday Evening January 10, 2007 Numbers 1:1-46 Numbered Dr. Ligon Duncan III I'd invite you to turn in your Bibles, if you have them, to the book of Numbers; and if you don't, there should be a sheet somewhere with the entire text of Numbers 1:1-54. I just want to remind you of a few things. Last week we said that Numbers may not be one of your favorite books; it may not be one of the books that you most recently read; you may not list it in your “Top Ten” list of favorite Bible…
The Lord's Day Morning January 7, 2007 Deuteronomy 6:4-9 “Biblical Family Life” Dr. J. Ligon Duncan III Amen. If you have your Bibles, I'd invite you to turn with me to the Book of Deuteronomy. Keep your thumb there in Deuteronomy, because I'm going to ask you to turn back in just a few moments to Philippians 2, by way of introducing the subject that we're going to be studying this morning. By the way, you've just sung that wonderful hymn, Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah.…
