Genesis 17:1-8 Faith Assured If you have your Bibles, I'd invite you to turn with me to Genesis 17. Thirteen years have passed since the birth of Ishmael. And Abram has resigned himself to be content with Ishmael as the son of promise. That may be a surprising statement for me to make. You may be asking, how in the world do you know that? And I will show you in just a few moments how I know that. But God had other plans. This chapter is about the personal, spiritual renewal of Abraham in this encounter with Almighty God. Genesis 17:9-14 The Sign of the Covenant If you have your Bibles, please turn with me to Genesis 17, as we continue our study in the life of Abraham. When last we left Abraham, this 100-year-old man who had a son by his maidservant, or the maidservant of his wife, had just been told that his name had been changed to be Father of Multitudes. And this was significant, because we know that this man had waited many years in expectation for the promise of God. His own heart has now more and more decided, ‘Well, I guess the Lord is never going to give me and my wife a child. Genesis 17:15-27 The Laughter of Unbelief Two weeks ago we began our studies in the chapter of Genesis 17. Abram, this man whose name meant exalted father, had spent 86 years of life not being a father at all, and then finally had had a child through his wife's maid servant, a concubine, named Hagar. And over that 13-year period, the idea had grown in Abram's mind that the promise that God had made to him to make him a father of many nations was actually going to be fulfilled through this son, Ishmael, who was now, by the time we get to Genesis 17, 13 years old.
