If you have your Bibles, I would invite you to turn to the first chapter of the Bible, Genesis, chapter 1. Genesis means origin or beginning. And this book, the book of Genesis, lays the groundwork, not only for the book of Exodus which logically and necessarily follows from it, but also for the rest of Scripture. Matthew Henry, a long time ago, said “Genesis is a name borrowed from the Greek. It signifies the original or generations.” Fitly is this book so called, for it is a history of originals. The creation of the world. The entrance of sin and death into the world. The invention of the arts.
