Paul has made it very clear especially from Romans, chapter 3 to 5, that our justification is by God’s grace. In other words, the forgiveness that we have, the acceptance that we have with God, is the product of God’s work, not our own work. We don’t save ourselves, we don’t work our way back into God’s good graces by attempting to be as good as we possibly can be, we don’t attempt to make a new start in life, which gives us a new life with God. But God, in His mercy, freely forgives us because of what Jesus did.
