The Dereliction
If you have your Bibles, I’d invite you to turn with me to Matthew, chapter 27. We have been working towards the crucifixion for some time now in our study of the gospel of Matthew. And all along during our studies in this particular chapter, Matthew, chapter 27, we have said that Matthew is recounting the death of Christ with a view to showing us the nature and the significance of Christ’s death. He’s wanting to show us what Christ endured for us, and then he’s wanting to show us what that means, what is the significance of that? What was the purpose of it in God’s plan? And all along from the time that we looked at Judas’ remorse and suicide, we’ve been moving closer and closer to the abyss of Jesus’ experience of the penalty for our sin. And today we come to that abyss…
